Product description

Sonata in E minor, Op.38, written by Johannes Brahms for cello and piano.  Brahms wrote the first three movements of the sonata in 1862 and the last movement was written in 1865. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the sonata has become well established in the repertoire of many important cellists.
This edition in the Bärenreiter Urtext series comes with a cello part marked by the editors with fingering and bowing based on the practice of Brahms' contemporaries, while an unmarked Urtext part is also available.  An important part of this edition is an extensive preface. It first informs us of the work's origins, early performances, publication and early reception, and the unique Commentary on Performance Practice is also notable.  The edition thus offers an exciting and often surprising insight into Romantic music performance.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1937) was a German composer, pianist and conductor. One of the most important composers of the nineteenth century, his work combines the best of the classical and romantic music. Brahms composed in all areas except opera.
