Product description

Editio Bärenreiter Praha presents a newly revised edition of Cello Sonata No. 3 by Bohuslav Martinu - one of the most prolific and versatile Czech composers of the first half of the 20th century. In view of the fact that the first and, to date, widely used printed edition of the Sonata contains a series of fundamental and what are often arbitrary changes and revisions to the original manuscript, it was not considered as a basis for this modern, urtext edition. Editor Ales Brezina (whose alterations to the score are marked in square brackets) has consistently kept very close to Martinu's manuscript, faithfully capturing all the nuances of this popular work, which is frequently performed all over the world.

Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1959) was a Czech composer, violinist, pedagogue and music critic. His artistic development progressed from impressionism through neoclassicism, expressionism and jazz inspiration to a purely compositional style of his own. Stylistically, he is closest to the generation of neo-classicists such as Arthur Honegger, Béla Bartók and others.
