Product description

The composition "Variations on a Silent Chord" was written by Milan Slavický in 1987. An impressive one-movement piece that grows out of a slowly repeated pianissimo chord that is central to the whole piece, all the chordal and melodic shapes in the piece are derived from it. The initial stiffness gradually melts away as the inner voices of the chord slowly come to life, forming a dramatic arch that returns to the initial quiet mood.

Milan Slavický (1947 -2009) was a Czech composer, musicologist and pedagogue. He came from a musical family, both his father Klement Slavický and both his grandfathers Kamil Voborský and Klement Slavický Sr. were composers. Milan Slavický studied composition at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno, and went on to study musicology at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He became a music director and radio dramaturge. He was also involved in journalism, professional musicological work and composition. Since 1990, Slavický has been teaching at the HAMU and at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, and was appointed associate professor at the HAMU (1997) and later professor (2001). His works are predominantly instrumental compositions. His works are often clearly structured, accessible to the listener and capable of achieving a strong emotional tension.
