Product description

Scaramouche, Op. 165, is a suite composed by Darius Milhaud in 1937. The suite is based on incidental music that Milhaud wrote for two theatrical performances, Le Médecin volant and Bolívar. Scaramouche draws inspiration from a variety of sources, with each of the suite's three movements having a different character. Milhaud's characteristic use of polytonality can be heard throughout the piece.
The piece was originally written as a piano duo.  Later, due to the popularity of the piece, the suite was adapted for various ensembles, including arrangements for solo alto saxophone or clarinet with orchestra or piano accompaniment.

Darius Milhaud (1892 - 1974) was a French composer, conductor and teacher. He was a member of Les Six (The Group of Six), a famous group of six composers who lived and worked in Montparnasse. He is one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century. His compositions are influenced by jazz and Brazilian music and make extensive use of polytonality. He was also a respected teacher, having taught many future classical and jazz composers, including Burt Bacharach, Dave Brubeck, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Iannis Xenakis.
